Yet there are times when I run across a resource that does a much better job of communicating these purposes than I can. One of these resources is an article about David Green, Founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby.

Since I cannot, I will just allow you to read it directly from him.

Wise Counsel In Unexpected Places

When I set out to create this blog over a year ago, I really had no idea what would come of it. I knew something in me wanted to do it and I felt God leading me in that direction, but my expectations were very low. I just did not know what was in store for me. Now, roughly 14 months later, I can say that the benefits have been overwhelming. Today, I want to discuss one of the most unexpected – wise counsel.

Unexpected Benefit!

See, when I started the blog, I had the distinct feeling that God would use it to teach others about integrating their Christian faith into their work. What I did not expect was that He would also use it to introduce me to wise counsel from many other Christian business owners and leaders!

Isn’t it funny how God turns things on us? We know that Scripture says that it is more blessed to give than to receive, but we often forget how that plays out in our lives. Well, I can say that I have been the recipient of more FROM this blog and those I have met because of it than I have ever given TO it.

Wise Counsel Examples

I have had the fortune to meet a man in Chandigarh, India that has taught me a lot about doing intentional ministry with whatever tools you have at your disposal. He has taught me about joy in tough circumstances and praising God in trials.

I have had the opportunity to get to know a couple of other bloggers like Tom Tarver, Kari Scare, Michael Nichols, and Loren Pinilis. Each of these has taught me something different, but all have been valuable.

I have also had the pleasure of meeting several Christian business owners and leaders in person. In fact, over the past couple of weeks, I have spent an hour or two with three different individuals that have each taught me something. Two of these guys were complete strangers to me a couple of months ago!

Just this afternoon I had the privilege of talking with another CEO about similar struggles we are having. He called me for some input on an idea he had, but I was also able to learn a valuable idea from him during the conversation. His wise counsel is something I cannot find just anywhere.

Wise Counsel In Scripture

The Bible speaks a lot about wise counsel. Take a look at the following verses:

    Without guidance, people fall, but with many counselors there is deliverance.Proverbs 11:14
    A fool’s way is right in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise.Proverbs 12:15
    Plans fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.Proverbs 15:22
    Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life.Proverbs 19:20

Different Opportunity?

Folks, I have obviously been blessed by God to have access to all of the wise counsel that I have mentioned above – and these are only the connections that have come as a result of this blog. I have other sources that are just as valuable.

The problem is that not everyone reading this blog right now feels they have the same opportunity for this amount of wise counsel as I do. Well, I have news for you.

You are wrong!

Pray For Wise Counsel

Listen to me before you puff up! I agree that not everyone has a blog that creates these opportunities. However, I did not have this source for wise counsel just over a year ago. It has only just recently become a source for me.

Even then, I had wise counsel available to me. I had it because I saw value in it and was committed to praying for it. That’s right, I have been praying daily for wisdom for years (as long as I can remember) and God promises that He will answer that prayer. He has been faithful to that promise for me.

    Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.
    James 1:5

Expect Results!

In fact, I believe that one of the reasons God led me to start this blog was that He knew it would be another avenue He could use to provide me with wise counsel – an answer to my prayer for wisdom!

If you are sincere about wanting wise counsel (which will lead to wisdom – if you pay attention!), then all you need to do is start praying for it. Pray earnestly and consistently, with faith, and it will come.

While you are praying, start looking for it expectantly in the unexpected places. You will likely be as surprised as I have at the results!

Are You Guilty Of Fast Food Leadership?

In my last post, I told you why vegetables are good for you. Of course, I used vegetables as a metaphor for trials and struggles in our lives. In staying with the food theme, today I want to discuss fast food and how it applies to Christian business owners and leadership!

Terrible Diet!

As I have told you before, I am in the car business. While the car business is known for many vices that I will not mention here, there is one that I believe is certainly appropriate to learning how to better represent our Christian faith in our businesses and jobs. This vice is a terrible diet.

Because we are in the retail business, we always need to be available for the customer. Traditional lunch hours are typically nonexistent for us. We grab a meal whenever we get a chance. This is just the nature of the business and we accept it as so.

The result of this issue is that most of us live off of fast food. It is quick and cheap and we can eat it in the car on the way back from the drive-thru! We may think to ourselves, “Today will be different – I will eat healthy today!” but we wait until the last minute and only have time for the fast food!

Don’t Have Time

We would love to go to the more upscale restaurants and get a salad bar or some fish, but we simply don’t have the time. Not only is the healthier food more time-consuming, but it is also more expensive. Even if we had the time, we would go broke eating there often.

Sure, if we were on top of things, we could make our own lunch and bring it to work with us. Not only could we better manage our diet, but we could also eat for a lot less money! Unfortunately, it is rare to find someone that plans like this.

Leadership Is Similar!

So, what is the point of this discussion? My point is that this habit is very similar in nature to the way many of us do leadership with our teams (or families).

Think about that for a moment.

Intentional Leadership

We all know and have been taught at some point that we need to be intentional about developing our teams. In a perfect world, we should plan out our week to include frequent one-on-one time with each of our team members.

We should plan ahead to have a meaningful discussion about their strengths and their weaknesses. Certainly, we should spend time with them building a plan for them to follow to success. All of this sounds familiar, right?

Why Fast Food Leadership?

Then why is it that the majority of us resort to fast-food leadership? Why, instead, do we grab a quick ten seconds between customers to tell them where they need to improve? Why do we wait until the last minute to give them a tip or two on how they should prepare for success? Do you think this is how Jesus operated with his disciples?

We know that if we would do a better job of planning ahead and prioritizing our time by block-scheduling when we can, we would be much more effective in creating teams worthy of success. Yet so few do this.

Take Control Of Your Schedule!

Folks, it is the same story for all of us – regardless of our industry. We simply must take control of our schedule and make it work for us. It is not acceptable for us to know what we should be doing and not do it. As James 4:17 says, when we know the good we are supposed to do and do not do it, it is a sin.

Harsh words, but true.

I encourage you to commit to changing your leadership diet. Quit resorting to the fast-food leadership and start working toward leadership that comes from planning ahead. I think you will see the benefits!

Are You Committed To Continuous Learning?

In business, we all know that continuous learning is crucial to our team’s success. I don’t think there is anyone in a leadership position that would argue against continuous learning. We probably all require it for every team member we have. My question is this…are you committed to it for yourself?

Continuous Learning Neglected?

Too many times, we as leaders neglect our own need for continuous learning. We do this for a number of reasons. Some say that they are simply too busy. Others may complain that they cannot afford the cost. Another group may argue that they really don’t need it.

Whatever the reasons, continuous learning is not always a prioritized part of a leader’s schedule. Folks, when this is true it is a tragedy. Take a look at the following verse from Proverbs.

The mind of the discerning acquires knowledge,
and the ear of the wise seeks it.
– Proverbs 18:15

I think this is clear advice – directing all of us to seek knowledge. The problem is that we often only apply this advice to those we lead. For the reasons listed above, we fail to apply it to ourselves.

More Important For Leaders

I would argue that continuous learning is more important for the leader than it is for the rest of the team. If the leader is not learning, then the team’s performance over time will decline. In some industries this is more true than others, but I believe it is true to some degree in all industries.

Take a look below at some reasons for leaders to commit themselves to continuous learning. As you read through the reasons, see if you think they speak to your situation.

    1. Leaders need to set the example for their team.
    2. Leaders need to be willing to do anything they ask of their team.
    3. Learning assists with vision.
    4. Without learning, competition will pass you by.
    5. The Bible directs us to commit to learning.

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, but I think there are enough reasons to make the point. As Christian leaders, we should be committed to continuous learning. We should seek it as a top priority, not as an afterthought.

My Experience

For me, this is not terribly difficult because I enjoy learning from a variety of sources. I personally make sure that I am always reading books, viewing webinars, listening to podcasts and sermons, and attending various seminars and conferences. I try to do this on a regular basis.

As I have talked about in recent posts, this has been more difficult for me as of late due to some turnover in our business. As a result, I did not spend as much time learning over that 90 day window. These things happen and we have to adapt.

At the same time, I made sure that I returned to this priority as quickly as I could. In fact, over the past 30 days, I have been fortunate enough to attend two very productive conferences. I wish I could express how incredibly helpful these conferences were for me. All I can say is that the time I spent at each will be bearing fruit for quite some time.

Industry-Specific Learning

The first was an invitation-only summit among dealers and vendors in our industry. The main topic for this summit was critical to the success of our business. I mention the invitation to make the point that the opportunity actually came to us BEFORE we were ready for it.

When the invitation arrived, we had not yet made the crucial hires we needed to make for our business and we were severely short-handed! I was not even certain the hires would be made by them time the summit rolled around. At the same time, our commitment to continuous learning made accepting the invitation an easier decision.

Christian Ministry Learning

In order to keep my mind on our Christian ministry in the business, I try to balance the learning. The second conference was Catalyst in Atlanta just last week. Unlike the summit, this conference was all about Christian leadership. The slate of speakers was mind-boggling and listening to them one-after-another felt like drinking from a fire hose!

All I could do was to furiously take notes and make plans to distill them into action plans at a later time. I will do this over the next few weeks as I work to lay out my LIFE plan for next year. I will also be using much of this material for future posts on this blog!

Learn AND Take Action

I mention this to make my final point. Knowledge without application is useless. Consider these words from James:

But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
– James 1:22

Folks, as I have said above, it is a tragedy for leaders to stop learning. The same is true for learning without doing!

I encourage you to be a leader that is fully committed to continuous learning AND one that converts what you learn into action. Don’t fall prey to allowing the urgent replace the important. Neither should you become a full-time student that never acts on your learning.

Are You Too Focused On The Results?

Business people count things. It is what we do! If you are like me, you often find yourself counting various processes or results in your business and your life. Of course, once you count whatever it is, you must then compare that count with something or someone else to determine if you are doing a good job or not. It is in our nature to do this and most of us do it quite often. However, there is a problem with doing this.

Results Are Critical

Now, before you even think about taking this to the extreme, please relax! I am not going to tell you to stop counting and measuring activities or results in your business. A significant part of being successful in business is establishing processes and goals and then measuring your progress to those goals.

I am not going to tell you there is anything inherently wrong with measuring results. That is not my point at all.

Watching Results Can Be Trouble

My point is really to shed light on some of the potential dangers of watching these results. While there is nothing wrong with the idea of measuring results, there are some pitfalls that you need to keep in mind. Once I go through the short list of these pitfalls, I think you will understand what I am saying and agree.

1. When you’re checking the results, you’re not watching what you’re doing!

    Take driving for example. Imagine you are driving on the interstate, but you are too focused on your dashboard computer as it tells you your rolling average fuel economy. Obviously, this behavior can have fatal consequences! In this case, it would be fine for you to check your mileage every time you fill up the tank or stop for food.

    We can do the same thing in our businesses. When we establish goals in a certain area, we need to measure and track the results on a regular basis. However, if we are constantly watching these results, we may miss something important! We need to set specific intervals for checking our results and resist the temptation to look more often.

2. You may find yourself well ahead of the goal and relax.

    One of my favorite scenes in the movie Facing The Giants was the death crawl scene (watch here).In this scene, the coach challenged one of the football players to crawl on all fours with another player riding on his back. The challenge was to get from the end zone to the fifty yard line. The catch was that the player was to do it blind-folded so he could not see his progress.

    Evidently the fifty-yard challenge was a stretch because the player thought he could never make it. The other players looked cynical as well. The result? The player, by giving his absolute best and ignoring the progress, ended up in the far end zone – a full 100 yards away! It was an amazing scene – proof that ignoring the progress and pressing on can produce greater-than-expected results!

    The blindfold was the key. If we can “blindfold” our teams every once in a while and challenge them to give their best without checking the results, I think we all would be surprised at what could be accomplished!

3. You may begin to believe that you are the reason for the results.

    Take a look at King David in 1 Chronicles 21. At the prompting of Satan, King David decided he wanted a census of the fighting men of Israel and Judah. The commander of the army, Joab, questioned David. He argued that God could multiply the size of the army to whatever number He needed – why the need to count? But David persisted and the census was taken.

    As a result, God punished Israel. Evidently David was beginning to feel some pride in his position and wanted to boast of the strength of the army. Rather than giving sole credit to God for the increase and the might of the army, David appeared to be looking for some credit of his own.

    If we allow ourselves to get too caught up in “counting” in our businesses or lives, pride is likely to creep in and separate us from dependence on God. Not all counting falls into this category, but you do need to be aware of the danger!

4. Your timeframe may be off.

    A watched pot never boils. Sometimes God gives us a picture of something He wants us to strive toward. Sometimes He does this without showing us WHEN that picture will come to fruition. If we continually watch the progress towards that picture, counting the results before the right time, we may be tempted to give up or get frustrated.

    God gave Joseph a clear picture, actually two, of his brothers bowing down to him. The problem was that God did not tell him when it would happen! As you can read in Genesis 37-45, it took over 20 years for the dream to come true. During the interim, Joseph was sold into slavery, accused of attempted rape, and confined to prison for many years.

    We can assume there were times when Joseph questioned God about the timing, but he remained faithful to trust God. Rather than constantly checking our results against the picture God has given us, we need to follow Joseph’s example!

Trust God

See, sometimes we can spend too much time checking our results. We can also check these results too often and at the wrong intervals. When we get to the point where we are too focused on watching our results, or the progress to these results, a lot of problems can arise. Instead, let’s learn to work our hardest and then put our trust in God and His faithfulness. The right results will come in His time.

9 Lessons From Our Hiring Process

Well, it is finally over and I am so glad! Of course, now the hard work begins! I am referring to the hiring process I have been going through over the past 90 days. While I have not discussed much detail, I have alluded to this process in several posts. Now that it is over, I want to share some of what I have learned.

Lesson #1 – Trust God.

This hiring process began for me at the first of June when a key leader in our organization let me know he had been given an opportunity that he simply could not decline. While I instantly knew that my workload had just increased dramatically, I also knew it would only be for a season.

For some reason, God had been preparing me for this very eventuality. As a result, I did not panic. For the first time in a long time, I really trusted – right from the start – that God would take me through to a better place. As a result of this trust, my stress level really never increased throughout the process. I was truly amazed by this!

Lesson #2 – Begin with Prayer.

Well, I did not immediately start by looking for a replacement. Instead, I began praying that God would reveal to me His structure. I prayed that God would take a blank slate and put His picture of our organization on it. I was prepared for His picture to look very different or exactly the same. I was prepared for anything in between.

I can honestly say, I was prepared for whatever He showed me! I can also say that I have not prayed for any other decision as much as I prayed about this one. I was determined that He was going to show me the way. I was not going to choose it for myself.

Lesson #3 – Seek Godly Advice.

In addition to prayer, I began to seek advice from those I knew and trusted to give godly advice. I sought this advice from my C12 group, other Christian dealers in my industry, and various other advisers I know personally. Quite simply, I did not try to handle this hiring process alone.

As a result of prayer and the advice we received, the decision was made to seek to hire a COO for the organization. This was to be a step of faith as this position has not existed in our organization before. Even so, when we looked at all of the pieces, it made the most sense.

Lesson #4 – Cast a Wide Net.

We began by running ads in a national trade magazine and online. I reached out to those contacts I knew would possibly know of a candidate and asked them for help. I also continued praying!

We were overwhelmed with the number of applications. Even though we included the description, “Christian automotive group” in the ad, we had over 70 applications submitted. This may not be many for some of you, but it was a mountain in my eyes.

Lesson #5 – Set Clear Guidelines (and Don’t Waiver).

It takes more than gut instinct to successfully filter 70+ applications down to a manageable number. Based on the scope of the job, we worked hard to come up with a list of several requirements that we used to evaluate resumes. While there were several applicants that I identified with, they did not make the cut unless they met the qualifications. There were several hard decisions, but I pressed through it. The first round of filtering by these guidelines brought our number down to 12 solid candidates.

From there, we had each candidate complete a behavior and motivator assessment. Again, due to the specific nature of the job, we had a clear picture of the type of personality that would be successful in this role. This picture was compiled from the input of several current key leaders in our organization. This avoided any single perspective driving biased results.

Lesson #6 – Turn Up The Heat

Once we had narrowed the candidates to the final three, the hiring process got more intense. We started with a phone interview of each candidate. This interview was conducted by a close friend and adviser who also happens to be an industry expert. He followed a script of a number of questions that were posed to each of the three candidates. He took notes on the answers that we reviewed together after each interview.

At this point, we each called several references on each candidate. Fortunately, one of us knew someone on each of the reference lists. It always helps to know the person giving the reference so you have a better feel for their perspective.

With good reports from the references, I then interviewed each of these three candidates via Skype. This gave me the opportunity to see facial expressions and gestures. I could gauge their stress in response to certain questions as well. Just like the phone interviews, I followed a set of questions that I posed to each candidate.

While the intent was to select one of the three candidates to bring to the dealership in person, we were unable to narrow it down beyond two candidates. So, we brought both candidates to town to go through the remainder of the hiring process. We scheduled them to come in back-to-back (two days each) over a four day period.

Lesson #7 – Involve Your Team

Each candidate arrived in town the day before the interviews would take place at the dealership. That evening, they went to dinner with me and my brother, our spouses, and the friend/adviser that conducted the phone interviews. At dinner, we got to see how they would interact with others. We also were able to get a very different perspective from our wives! This proved to be very helpful.

The next morning, each candidate had breakfast with two members of our executive leadership team. Then they went through a series of interviews with management teams from each department. They were also interviewed by a mixed group of front-line employees. This part of the hiring process, an idea from another adviser, was priceless! I would not trade it for anything!

Lesson #8 – Can You Work With Them?

For the last couple of hours before they were scheduled to depart, the candidates answered some tough questions, ate lunch with us, and answered more tough questions on a variety of issues. At this point, the candidates had been vetted and were both capable of filling the position. It really boiled down to which was a better cultural fit with our team. Which one would we enjoy working with more? Which one seemed like they would enjoy working with us?

Lesson #9 – Pray Some More

At the end of the entire hiring process, we were all clear on the candidate we thought would be the best fit. It was not an easy process and both candidates were highly qualified, but we felt the right one had come to the surface. At this point, I decided to wait one more day.

I prayed in depth that God would make it clear to us who we should choose. Although we had prayed all through the process, I was determined to make absolutely sure that our decision came from God, not from our own preferences or biases. I wanted Him to give me a peace about moving forward.

Hiring Process Result

The final result was that we made an offer of employment to one of the candidates. He accepted with excitement and started at the first of the month. Like I said in the beginning, there is now a lot of work ahead of us! At the same time, I trust that God will guide us through this new season.

What you would do differently?

Do You Trust God Or Your Own Senses?

God gave us our senses. With the ability to taste, touch, feel, hear, and smell, we are equipped to experience the world in which we live. The problem is that quite often, our senses can fail us. It is because of this fact that we should always look to trust God and His guidance for us. We should do this even when our senses tell us otherwise.

Trusting Your Senses?

This could not be more true than in the story of the Gibeonites and their deception of Joshua and the Israelites (Joshua 9:3-13). Imagine standing there as you see the Gibeonites approach with the look of exhaustion and hunger. Picture their threadbare clothing and patched sandals. Try to think of how they probably smelled.

Now, as children of God, put yourself in Joshua’s shoes when the Gibeonites claim to be from a distant land seeking peace. Knowing God’s law regarding people from outside of the Promised Land, think about your natural response. Every input your senses are feeding to your brain tells you they are telling the truth. Their story matches with the evidence given.

What do you do?

Wrong Decision!

Well, obviously you have read the story. You know that Joshua and the Israelites agree to a peace treaty with the Gibeonites. They believed the evidence. While they did briefly question the Gibeonites on some of it, this was not enough to discern the truth. Instead, the Israelites locked themselves into peace with a people group that God wanted them to destroy.

Trust God In Business?

Can this happen in the business world? Don’t you and I face similar challenges everyday as we attempt to run our businesses as platforms for Christian ministry? I don’t know about you, but this story is very common in my world.

I can only assume you face the same thing. The deceiver could be a potential partner or a candidate for a leadership position in your company. Make the wrong decision here and you will likely pay dearly!

Other pitfalls could include vendors or even customers that appear one way and end up actually being something totally different. If you commit to these with enough resources before you determine the truth, the price can be significant.

What Is The Answer?

So what should we do to avoid these traps? What could Joshua have done differently that would have prevented him from making a treaty with the deceivers?

For the answer to these questions, I am only going to need four words. This is not that complicated, but the reward for following my advice here is huge. Here is the simple answer:

Slow Down. Trust God.

That is it. It really is that simple. It does not require spreadsheets or committee meetings. No focus groups or off-site retreats are necessary!

The Better Choice

Joshua could have simply told the Gibeonites that he needed some time to process their request. He could have said he would meet them back at the same spot the next morning. Then he could have gone into his tent and prayed.

I do not know how long it would have taken for God to speak to his heart about the deception. I really do not think it would have been long at all. But even if it was an extended period of time before he received his answer, wouldn’t it have been worth it?

Determined To Trust God

As I have mentioned here before, I have recently been going through a hiring process for a key member of our leadership team. I cannot convey in this post how critical this decision was to the future of our company. A wrong move here could be devastating.

As a result, and due to my ongoing study of this passage, I have been taking my time and praying more than I ever have for a decision. It took me just over a full month from start to finish to go through this hiring process, but I was determined to trust God to pick this candidate.

I don’t want it to sound like I was interviewing a bunch of deceivers. At the same time, you do have to sort through a lot of fluff and word-smithing to filter through resumes today. It is also difficult to discern the whole truth when talking on the phone, over Skype, and even in person. There were many times that I could have decided to trust my senses for a decision. Instead, I remained determined to trust God for the results.

One More Day

Even on what I thought was the last day of the process, I decided to wait again. My gut wanted to move forward, but I took one more day to pray and trust God to speak to me about the decision. Nothing changed, but the decision was that much clearer the next morning.

Now that I am looking back on the process, I am confident that my goal has been achieved! The new leader starts tomorrow morning and I am truly excited to have him as a part of the team. Only time will tell how good the decision was for both of us, but for right now I believe it will prove fruitful!

Good Advice

Christian Business Blog – One Year Later!

Christian businessI am going to interrupt my series on Christian business lessons from Joshua to celebrate! Exactly one year ago, I started this blog with no clue what would come of it! I knew I had a lot of pent-up thoughts and ideas from my experience trying to run our business as a platform for Christian ministry. I knew I wanted to try to get that message out to other Christian business owners and leaders. I did NOT know if it would work or not!

Well, as we all know (and often forget!), if we will surrender to God and just follow His lead, then we will usually find that He will surprise us! I can tell you from the past 12 months of doing this blog – this is still true! God is amazing and is able to show off!

Original Purpose

Here is my original purpose in writing this blog:

I have started a new blog called Christian Faith At Work. I am writing it to business owners and leaders who are trying to figure out how to integrate their Christian faith into their businesses.

By including the resources I have accumulated over the past eight years of learning to use my business as a vehicle for ministry, as well as real-life examples from my experiences, I will teach the readers how to run their business from an eternal perspective.

They will not only learn from the resources I have gathered, but they can also interact with someone who is actually doing it, learning from my mistakes and victories.

I love looking at the growth over time, especially when I see results that cannot be quantified with statistics. One of my favorites is the opportunity God has brought in the form of a new friend in Chandigarh, India.

My friend Rajeev is a pastor and evangelist in Northern India. God has put us together for a specific purpose. I go into a little more detail here, but the bottom line is that I have been given the opportunity to teach believers in India (via Skype) on two separate occasions about taking their faith into the workplace!

Right now, we are planning a third session where the audience is made up of pastors! This way, we can multiply the teaching! If you had told me six months ago that this was going to happen, I would have laughed at you! I cannot wait to see where God takes it from here.

The Enemy: Serpent Or Lion?

This is my third post in a series of lessons from one story in the book of Joshua that we can take and apply in Christian business. In the first post, I set the stage for the series by briefly summarizing the story of Joshua and the Gibeonites. In the second post, we discussed how we should not relax after a victory. Today, I want to talk specifically about the enemy that Joshua and the Israelites faced and how we can learn from their experience.

Multiple Enemy Attacks

If you look back at other times during the Israelites’ journey to the Promised land, beginning in Exodus, you will see where the enemy came after them on multiple occasions. In most cases, the Israelites were simply attacked by the enemy in a straightforward way (Exodus 14:5-10; 17:8, Numbers 14:45; 21:33).

However, in the case of the Gibeonites, the Israelites were not attacked head-on. Instead, the enemy came to them in disguise. Instead of lining their armies up against those of the Israelites, the Gibeonites used stealth to execute a “sneak-attack” of sorts. In the end, this was even more effective for them!

Second Lesson

The second lesson we can learn from Joshua’s experience with the Gibeonites is this:

The enemy sometimes comes as roaring lion, sometimes as slithering serpent.

Two Examples

There are many examples in Scripture where the enemy (the devil) attacks the people of God. We can cite examples from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are two specific instances that come to mind that illustrate my point very well.

Likely, you can recall the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, when Satan appeared to them and tricked them into eating from the Tree of Life, an act that God had forbidden.

Later, we see Satan approach God and get permission to attack Job and his family. In this case, Job’s entire family (except for his wife) is killed along with his livestock.

Scripture On The Enemy

In both of these cases, the enemy was intent on opposing God and doing harm to his children. Some people may say that this only happens in the Old Testament, but here are a couple of verses from the New Testament that say otherwise.

In 2 Corinthians 11:3, it says this:

But I fear that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds may be seduced from a complete and pure devotion to Christ.

Later in 1 Peter 5:8, it says the following:

Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

Sometimes Serpent, Sometimes Lion

I am not sure exactly what you believe about Satan, the devil, the enemy, etc., but I personally believe the Bible is clear that he exists and is opposed to God, and therefore His children (us). Sometimes he will attack us as a lion would, but other times he sneaks up on us like a serpent. This is not only true back then, but is also true today.

Because this is true, we cannot assume it will always be easy to identify the enemy when he comes at us. Unlike Joshua, we need to be prepared for a lion or a serpent!

You Will Be Attacked

In business, this can mean any number of things. As you strive to use your business as a platform for ministry, you must know that the enemy is going to come after you. It is simple fact that your efforts to share God’s love through your business is in direct opposition to the enemy’s efforts to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Knowing this, you must therefore expect attack.

This attack can come in several forms, but it will not always be obvious. When it is obvious, I think it is easier for us to do battle. It may not be any easier, but at least we know what we are dealing with.

On the other hand, like the Gibeonites did to Joshua, the enemy may come to you in disguise. There may not be any recognizable danger. In this case, your only defense is to remain in close relationship to God so that He can steer you through it.

Relationship Is Best Defense

In fact, our best defense against the attack of the enemy is always to remain in close relationship with God. In some cases, He may help you avoid the enemy’s attack. In other cases, like with Job, He will be there to see you through it. Either way, it is safest when you are connected to Him and His wisdom and peace.

What Can We Learn From A Deception?

Have you ever had a stretch of time when you just knew that God was teaching you things, one after another? Have you ever been through extremely difficult challenges, but you were actually able to embrace them because you knew that God was using them to prepare you for something great in the future?

Well, I am going through one of those times right now. I have been alluding to this for weeks now and I have already written several posts directly from my recent experiences. Today, I want to start a series that comes from Scripture I have been reading during my morning quiet times. I believe there are some clear lessons that can be applied to Christian business.

My Renewed Quiet Time

Back at the beginning of June, I began to sense a change coming. I was not sure how long before it would take place, but I knew it was coming. I decided to mix up my quiet time and jump into a book of the Bible. My plan was to slowly progress through the book at whatever pace was comfortable.

Knowing I was likely headed into a storm, I chose the book of Joshua. For some reason, the words, “Be strong and courageous” were ringing in my mind and I knew these words were repeated often in the beginning of Joshua. So that is where I started. I also chose to read a mini-commentary on the book of Joshua called, Be Strong (Wiersbe, W).

Storm, Lessons Came Quickly

Very quickly, things began to happen at work and I knew the storm was already upon me. The cool thing was that I began to see clear lessons coming almost immediately from my time spent going through Joshua.

Gibeonite Deception

The story I want to focus on in this series is called the Gibeonite Deception. This particular story is told in Joshua 9:1 – 10:15. If you want to get the full effect from this story, I strongly recommend you read it first. Today, I will give you a little background on the story. I will also give you some questions to ponder until the next post.

Background

We pick up the story with Joshua leading the Israelites in the conquest of the Promised Land. Moses has already led them out of Egypt and through the wilderness for 40 years. Moses turned over his authority to Joshua right before he died. Since then, Joshua and the Israelites have conquered Jericho and, in a second effort, the city of Ai.

After the second battle of Ai, Joshua and the Israelites built an altar to the Lord. They were fresh off of victory and it appears their head was in the game – especially after the disaster they brought on themselves immediately after Jericho with the sin of Achan (Joshua 6:18-19; 7:1-26).

Deception Is Birthed

As we start reading in Joshua 9, word is getting around about how God is with the Israelites. Other kings are beginning to realize that their cities are in serious danger. Many are melting in fear. However, the Gibeonites were not cowering. They were resourceful.

They put together a team of men from the city and went to great lengths to disguise the fact that they were local. They wore dirty, old clothes and patched sandals. They carried moldy bread and cracked wineskins. Acting as if they were a delegation from a distant country, they approached Joshua and asked for a peace treaty.

Deception is Successful

Joshua and the Israelites questioned the Gibeonites, but finally decided they were genuine. Joshua agreed to the peace treaty and ratified it by an oath.

It was only three days later when someone in the Israelite camp heard that the Gibeonites were in fact living nearby. When questioned about why they had deceived the Israelites, the Gibeonites responded that they had acted out of fear. They said they knew God was with the Israelites and was planning to wipe them out like the other cities.

Knowing he had no choice but to honor the treaty, Joshua let them live and did not allow the Israelites to attack their city. In addition, when called on soon after, Joshua and the Israelites came to the defense of the Gibeonites. This was a valid response to their treaty.

Multiple Lessons

That is the basic story. Over the next several posts, I am going to pull out lessons that I believe apply to us today as we attempt to run businesses as platforms for Christian ministry. I expect that you will see how we can take the actions of Joshua, the Israelites, and the Gibeonites, and learn timeless truths that are meaningful today.

Read back over the story and then ponder the following questions. Each one will help you to better understand the lessons we will pull from this story.
