<p>Either you thought of it or someone you know has tossed it up to you.  Either way, it is a valid question.  After all, based on the news and political issues all around us, it appears that the last thing you want to do is associate your business with anything Christian.  It is too polarizing, right?</p>
<h3>Barna Group Study</h3>
<p>Surprisingly, it is not as big an issue as you might think!  According to a study conducted by Barna Group (check out the <a title="Do Americans Support Christian Businesses and Brands?" href="https://www.barna.com/research/do-americans-support-christian-businesses-and-brands/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">details of the study here</a>), the people that may be offended with any Christian connection to your business are actually a very small minority.  Let&#8217;s look at the results.</p>
<p>When asked in two different ways about the likelihood of their doing business with a company that was managed according to Christian principles or embraced and promoted the Christian faith, roughly <strong>55%</strong> of these consumers indicated they were indifferent!  In other words, the connections to Christianity did not affect their buying decisions in either direction.  Of course, while this is good news, it really does not tell us what we want to know.  Let&#8217;s dig a little further.</p>
<p>How about those that would be <strong><em>more likely</em></strong> to do business with a Christian company?  These responses to the question made up roughly <strong>40%</strong> of the total responses!  Two out of every five consumers surveyed said that a company&#8217;s connection to the Christian faith would make them more likely to do business with them.  In fact, almost <strong>25%</strong> said they would be <strong><em>a lot more likely</em></strong> to do so!</p>
<h3>Fantastic News!</h3>
<p>I see both of these results as fantastic news!  While I do not believe we are to market and advertise our Christian faith in our business (some may argue this), I am glad to know that the vast majority of those who see the connection are either indifferent or more likely to do business with us!</p>
<p>So what percentage of the responses is left over?</p>
<p>How many people are <strong><em>less likely</em></strong> to do business with a Christian company?</p>
<p>According to the Barna Group study, only 3% &#8211; <em><strong>less than one in thirty </strong></em>&#8211; of the respondents said they would be less likely to do business with a company that has overt connections to Christianity.  Only 3%&#8230;is that really a large enough population to cause concern?</p>
<h3>Our Experience</h3>
<p>While I have not conducted an official study like Barna, I have been outspoken about the Christian foundation for our business for almost fourteen years now.  I have never been confronted by anyone claiming offense at our beliefs.  I have had a couple of email complaints (literally 2 or 3) stating they would not purchase from us due to our Christian witness.  I am also certain that we have had customers walk away, but just not voice their opinion.  I don&#8217;t doubt that at all.</p>
<p>But really, how many do you think make up that group?  If your experience DOUBLED that of the Barna study, would 6% kill your business?  Do you really fear the size of that group more than you trust God at His Word?  He promises to meet our needs (<a title="And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+4&amp;version=HCSB" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Philippians 4:19</a>).  He promises if we will seek Him first, he will add &#8220;these things&#8221; (<a title="But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you." href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6&amp;version=HCSB" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Matthew 6:33</a>).  God is faithful to make good on His promises (<a title="Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. " href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+7&amp;version=NIV" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Deuteronomy 7:9</a>).  Trust Him to do just that!</p>
<p><strong><em>What are you really afraid of?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>Isn&#8217;t your God bigger than that fear?</em></strong></p>
<p><em><strong>What should be your next step?</strong></em></p>

<div>
<div>My words will be few in today’s post.  Below, I have listed seven of the most common fears for Christian business owners and leaders.  As an antidote to each fear, I have listed several passages <a href="https://www.christianfaithatwork.com/read-apply-scripture/">from God’s Word</a>.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Take your time with each fear and <a href="http://christianfaithatwork.com/confessions-practical-atheist/">ask yourself</a> if that is something you have experienced.  Don’t rush &#8211; the answer may not be immediately obvious.  Pray as you do this.  Then read the verses for each fear.  <a href="https://www.christianfaithatwork.com/afraid-loss/">Ask yourself</a> if you believe God and His promises.  If you do, store these words in your heart to combat the fear.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<h3>Fear in General</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.</div>
<div>Philippians 4:6</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.</div>
<div>Psalm 34:4</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.</div>
<div>2 Timothy 1:7</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.</div>
<div>Joshua 1:9</div>
</blockquote>
<div>
&nbsp;</p>
<h3> Fear of Loss</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.</div>
<div>Philippians 4:19</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.</div>
<div>Matthew 6:19-21</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.</div>
<div>Proverbs 28:6</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<h3> Fear of Weakness</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my</div>
<div>weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.</div>
<div>2 Corinthians 12:9</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.</div>
<div>Romans <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585927"><span class="aQJ">8:26</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.</div>
<div>Isaiah 40:31</div>
</blockquote>
<div>
&nbsp;</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Fear of Persecution</h3>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,</div>
<div>2 Timothy <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585928"><span class="aQJ">3:12</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.</div>
<div>John <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585929"><span class="aQJ">15:18</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>But even if you should suffer for righteousness&#8217; sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,</div>
<div>1 Peter <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585930"><span class="aQJ">3:14</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness&#8217; sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.</div>
<div>Matthew <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585931"><span class="aQJ">5:10</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
<div>
<h3></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Fear of Insignificance</h3>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>For you formed my inward parts;  you knitted me together in my mother&#8217;s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works;  my soul knows it very well.</div>
<div>Psalm 139:13-14</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
</div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.</div>
<div>Ephesians 1:4-5 (NLT)</div>
</blockquote>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>
<blockquote>
<div>Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.</div>
<div>Luke 12:7</div>
</blockquote>
<div>
<h3></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Fear of Failure</h3>
</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.</div>
<div>Psalm 34:17-19</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.</div>
<div>Psalm 73:26</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.</div>
<div>Proverbs 3:5-6</div>
</blockquote>
<h3></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Fear of Defeat</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.</div>
<div>John <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_1578585932"><span class="aQJ">16:33</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.</div>
<div>Deuteronomy 20:1-4</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?</div>
<div> 1 John 5:4-5</div>
</blockquote>
<h3></h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Fear of Being Alone</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>
<div>Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.</div>
<div>Psalm 23:4</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.</div>
<div>Deuteronomy 31:6</div>
</blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.</div>
<div>Romans 8:38-39</div>
</blockquote>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>I would encourage you to save this post for reference in the future.  You can also search the Bible for more passages on each fear.  There are plenty more in addition to these!  Just remember that God does not give us fear, but He absolutely <a href="https://www.christianfaithatwork.com/secret-boldness-crisis/">provides the answer</a> for it.</div>
<div></div>

<p>Trust Him.  He is faithful!</p>

Whether it is a business decision, family situation, or personal question, we have all desperately wanted God to lead us in the right direction. The problem is that we often fail to get the direction we seek and end up frustrated or confused.</p><a href="https://www.christianfaithatwork.com/how-do-i-discern-gods-direction/"></a>

<h3>Direction Exercise</h3>
<p>In <a href="http://christianfaithatwork.com/want-to-know-the-will-of-god/" title="Want To Know The Will of God?" target="_blank">my last post</a>, I described this kind of situation. I then went through an exercise in an effort to illustrate what may be part of our problem. While this exercise may be an oversimplification of the process of seeking God&#8217;s direction in our lives, I think you will understand the main point when we are done.</p>
<h3>Compass Competition</h3>
<p>To recap the details of the exercise, you are on a team in an outdoor scouting competition. The goal of the competition is to use a compass to quickly navigate a series of directions and to arrive at a designated location for your team. The first team to arrive at their designated location wins.</p>
<p>The twist is that many of the teams have also been given a magnet that is to be attached to the side of the compass and to remain there throughout the competition. </p>
<p>Because compasses rely on an attraction to the earth&#8217;s magnetic north pole, the additional magnet plays havoc on the compass needle. As a result, these compasses are rendered virtually useless and only serve to frustrate and confuse the teams using them.</p>
<h3>Parallels</h3>
<p>Now that you are caught up, lets move on to the parallels.</p>
<p>Assume for the purpose of the exercise that the direction we seek from God is represented by the magnetic north pole. For this analogy, this magnetic north is the truth, the leading we need. </p>
<p>Imagine the compass represents our efforts to discern God&#8217;s direction through the study of His Word, seeking advice from godly mentors, and prayer. Without any other interference, these efforts can often help us to find the direction from God that we seek.</p>
<h3>Outside Influences</h3>
<p>The problems arise when outside influences begin to affect these efforts. These influences are represented by the magnets we added to the compass. I can initially think of three categories into which these influences fall:</p>
<p><strong>1. Desires</strong> &#8211; selfishness, greed, fame, wealth, respect, acceptance, power, independence</p>
<p><strong>2. Busyness</strong> &#8211; work, social activities, children, ministry</p>
<p><strong>3. Fear</strong> &#8211; loss of respect, physical harm, alienation, mockery, poverty, dependence</p>
<p>The more you think about the various influences we bring with us as we seek to gain direction from God, the more some of them may blur from one category to another. The fact remains that it is clear these influences can dramatically affect how we hear direction from God.</p>
<p>The more of these influences we bring with us as we come before God, the less likely it is that we will ever be able to hear His still small voice!</p>
<h3>Example Of Influences</h3>
<p>For example, imagine my work schedule is killing me and my wife is telling me I have to do something about it. I know she is probably right, but if I change jobs I will probably have to get rid of some of the expensive toys I have purchased lately because I won&#8217;t be able to afford them. </p>
<p>I attempt to read the Bible for answers on what to do, but I simply cannot stay awake. So I go to a godly mentor and ask for his advice. As I describe the situation to him, I leave some of the facts out because I don&#8217;t want him looking down on me.</p>
<p>He gives me advice to consider, but it is not as severe as it would have been if I had told him everything. Even what he tells me to do seems a little dramatic to me, so I tone it down before I implement it.</p>
<p>I then pray to God that He will bless this slightly new direction and thank Him for speaking to me through my friend. I head into the next day feeling pretty good.</p>
<h3>Results?</h3>
<p>What do you think happens?</p>
<p>Exactly. Not much in the way of improvement. </p>
<p>After weeks of getting the same feedback from my wife, I am so frustrated. I did exactly what my pastor told me to do. I read the Bible, got advice from a godly mentor, and prayed about it. What more can a guy do, right? My &#8220;compass&#8221; should be working fine, but something is wrong!</p>
<p>Looking back over this example, can you see all of the outside influences (magnets) I brought into the picture? It is no wonder my &#8220;compass&#8221; is not working!</p>
<h3>What Are Your Magnets?</h3>
<p>So the key question for you is this &#8211; what are your magnets?</p>
<p>When you begin to seek God&#8217;s direction for your life, are you coming with a pure heart? Are you coming to Him with ALL of your heart committed to Him and Him alone? </p>
<p>Are you willing to get rid of the influences? Are you willing to focus always and only on His voice, forsaking the rest of those around you? </p>
<p>Are you willing to hear what He tells you and then do it, regardless of the potential cost?</p>
<h3>Scriptures To Ponder</h3>
<p>I am going to leave you with the following Scriptures to read and meditate on. Notice that all of these promises from God are dependent on your full commitment to Him. No magnets allowed!</p>
