Applying Scripture To Business

In my last post, I shared one of my personal examples of applying Scripture to my own family business. Of course, the experience I shared was painful and more difficult than I ever imagined it would be. At the same time, the fulfillment and eventual success we have seen has made it worthwhile.

In that last post, I promised you that I would share my 5-step process for applying Scripture to my business practices. Obviously, our businesses are each unique. I cannot tell you how or where you need to start with your particular business. At the same time, I think you will find this process to be a one-size-fits-all process.

Step #1 – READ

Clearly, we won’t make it far in applying Scripture if we are not reading it. This may seem obvious, but there are probably many of us that don’t read much of it on a consistent basis. This must change.

It is also helpful to start with reading Scripture that is easier to understand and apply. As I have said many times, Proverbs is the perfect place to start. The book of James is another good one. See what stands out to you.

Step #2 – REVIEW

So often when I am reading the Bible, I find myself going too fast. Because there is such depth in it, we can easily miss profound truths and business advice if we are not careful.

When you read for to purpose of applying Scripture to business, slow down. Review what you have read a couple of times. Make sure there isn’t a gem hidden in the passage that is meant for you in your particular situation.

Step #3 – REFLECT

When you find something that might apply to you and your business, stop and take a few moments to reflect on it. Think about how it could apply to you as a leader in your business. How could it change your business processes or policies?

Pray as you reflect and ask God for wisdom and insights into this passage. Ask Him to make it more clear to you. Ask Him to show you how you should act on what you have read. This time is likely some of the most crucial in this process. Rushed, it can lead you astray. Skipped, it can cause you to miss opportunities altogether.

Step #4 – RESPOND

You have read and reviewed a passage. You found something you think might apply, so you have reflected on it, praying through the process. Now you have an actionable item. So, Act On It!

This is the pivotal point in the process of applying Scripture to business. This is where the rubber meets the road. Just to be sure, I am NOT recommending rash reckless action.

I AM recommending that you do what you know God is leading you to do in your business. Do it and pray He will give you the strength to survive and follow through. He is faithful to honor your obedience!

Step #5 – REPEAT

The best time to go looking for more opportunities to apply Scripture is when you have just done it! Take advantage of the momentum that comes from seeing God work in your business.

Make the reading, reviewing, reflecting on, and responding to Scripture a habit in your business paradigm. Hold yourself accountable to this habit and enlist others to do the same. I promise you will be glad you did!
